Loneliness: a nightmare for a social animal

According to some statistics, between 17% and 20% of dogs suffer from anxiety when they are left alone at home. Other statistics speak even of much higher figures.

The demonstration of that anxiety can be expressed in many ways: vocalizations (barking, howling, crying), destruction (breaking doors, floor, furniture, curtains, carpets, … with paws or mouth) and peeing and/or pooping in the house, are some of those more frequent manifestations. Most are annoying to us (such as property damage) or to our neighbors (such as barking and howling). And the one who suffers the most is our dog, who involuntarily generates a negative emotional state from which he does not know how to go out alone.

But there are good news! With proper work, Separation Anxiety can be reduced, or even completely resolved. At CANMIGOS we are expert specialists in working with Dogs with Separation Anxiety, thanks to an innovative methodology that allows us to maximize the results and increase even more the chances of success. We are part of a team of 90 specialists around the world working with dogs with Separation Anxiety, with the title of Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer (CSAT).

Keep reading to know more details about our work proposal:

What is Separation Anxiety (SA)?

There are dogs that are not prepared to emotionally manage a situation where they are left alone at home. Other dogs that do not manage well if a specific person in the family (sometimes several) leaves. Both cases technically have different names: first isolation stress, and second separation anxiety. But the term Separation Anxiety (SA) is commonly used for both cases. And we will do so too, also because our work proposal (see details below) is functional for both.

During an episode of Separation Anxiety the dog suffers something similar to a panic attack or a phobia. Imagine a person who has spider phobia. When this person sees a spider and gives him/her a panic attack, it makes no sense to explain that the spider is far away, or that it cannot cause him/her any harm: at that moment the person acts in a merely emotional way, and cannot reason. Something like this happens to the dog that has Separation Anxiety when left alone at home: he/she manages it as it comes from the depths of its emotionality: some bark, others howl, others scratch doors, walls or the ground, others bite the sofa , the cushions or a piece of furniture, others pee or poop, others vomit, others do not eat and/or do not drink, … even some of them self-injure. It does not matter if we explain that we are coming back (we have seen people who explain it verbally, as if they were human): they are overpassed, they do not understand, they are VERY emotionally affected.

And of course, it does not make sense that when we come back we let them off the hook for what they have broken, or put their nose in the pee they have made while we scold them: the only thing we are going to achieve with this is that they can be negatively sensitized to our return (in fact the “guilty face” that many times is named has in part its explanation here).

It must be worked in a positive way so that the dog desensitizes (he/she does not care) to the fact of staying alone, and this the basis of our work proposal (see below).

Work proposal

At CANMIGOS we are expert specialists in working with dogs with Separation Anxiety.

Our work proposal is based on making a progressive desensitization: we work with the dog and the human to do absences increasingly longer but progressively and at the pace that the dog is able to manage. We analyze all the details of the dog’s behavior to evaluate the work threshold above which he panics. The objective is to plan the work to get to raise this threshold more and more, but never surpass it (because if we exceed it the dog does not learn and can be sensitized more).

Work system

If you are interested in working with us as specialists in working with dogs with Separation Anxiety, this is what we will do:

  • In an initial phone call you explain the details we need to know about your dog initially and we explain the work methodology that we are going to follow (fill out the contact form below if you want us to call you).
  • We conduct an Initial Assessment online, remotely, by videoconference (see On-line Work below). In it, we will talk about all the details, both about your dog and how we are going to work. We will also make an evaluation of a real absence, where we will observe the dog remotely during the same.
  • Each week you will perform 5 missions (this is how we call the daily exercises) that we will prepare each day for you, based on the results of the previous day’s exercise. You will have a personalized daily follow-up and guidance, as well as a statistical detail of the progression so far.
  • At the end of each week we perform a Re-assessment, also remotely. In it we evaluate the progression of that week, and we address the most specific doubts and needs, apart from seeing first-hand the exercises and absences practiced that day.

All of this is supported by a team of 90 dog trainers who specialize in working with dogs with Separation Anxiety. So, in case any problem appears beyond our reach, we have their opinions to decide the specific work to be done.

Online work, in remote

Working Separation Anxiety with a dog trainer coming to your house is challenging, because the trainer comes to your house, to leave the dog alone (in broad strokes, although there is much more complexity in this work). For this reason, our work proposal is based on the online Assessment and Re-assessments, through a videoconference. In this way we can talk to the human client and observe the exercises and absences with the canine client. This gives a lot more normality (facing the dog) to the fact that his/her human comes out the door, because for him/her it is not the same that his/her reference person leaves, or that his human is leaving with this unknown dog trainer who has came to his/her house. And so, we can evaluate the situation in the most realistic way possible.

Pricing

For dogs with Separation Anxiety we require a minimum commitment of 4 weeks of work, because it is the minimum time that we consider necessary for them to begin to see results. Once the 4 weeks have passed, the client and the dog trainer will assess the progression and the possibility/need to renew the work package.

During those 4 weeks of work, the price includes:

  • Initial online Assessment (only in the first 4 weeks package).
  • Design of the daily missions (5 days a week), in a personalized way and based on what you and your dog need specifically.
  • Support (of tasks and emotional) daily (5 days a week).
  • 4 on-line Re-assessment sessions (one per week).
  • Statistical detail of the progression so far.
  • Support of a team of 90 dog trainers who are experts in working with dogs with Separation Anxiety.

Price: € 660, VAT included

(Renewals of the 4-week package are priced at € 560, VAT included)
